How to convert weight units

Weight conversions are based on exact definitions: 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg, 1 pound = 16 ounces, and 1 stone = 14 pounds. To convert kilograms to pounds, multiply by 2.20462; to convert pounds to kilograms, multiply by 0.453592.

Example: 70 kg × 2.20462 = 154.32 lb. To express that in stone, divide by 14: 154.32 ÷ 14 = 11 stone with 0.32 lb left over.

Frequently asked questions

Is a ton the same everywhere?

No — there are three. A metric ton (tonne) is 1,000 kg. A US “short” ton is 2,000 lb (907.18 kg), and a UK “long” ton is 2,240 lb (1,016.05 kg). This converter includes all three so you can pick the right one.

How many grams are in an ounce?

One ounce is 28.35 grams. This is the everyday (avoirdupois) ounce. Precious metals use the troy ounce, which is heavier at 31.10 grams and isn’t covered by this converter.

What is the difference between mass and weight?

Strictly speaking, kilograms and pounds measure mass, while weight is the force of gravity on that mass. In everyday use — bathroom scales, recipes, shipping — the two terms mean the same thing, and this converter works for both.
